Hazard Analysis and the Role of Personal Protective Equipment in Preventing Maritime Accidents in Tanzania

Hamis Omari Kikuruzo and Benjamin Mbeba Meli

Abstract

The marine sector in Tanzania, particularly vessel operations between Da es Salaam and Zanzibar, has safety issues in spite of the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and hazard analysis. Extended lapses in putting these precautions into practice result in acci- dents endangering lives, assets, and the industry’s standing. With an emphasis on the Da es Salaam– Zanzibar route, this study evaluated the application of PPE and hazard analysis in Tanzania’s maritime sector. The study used Human Factors Engineering to assess crew behavior to determine the main hazards associated with marine incidents caused by improper PPE use. Personal protec- tive equipment (PPE) use was affected by risk perceptions, demographics, barriers to use, comfort, training, environmental conditions, and the need for effective communication and training to ensure proper use during emergencies. The study found that workers were still exposed to poisons even though they were wearing PPE because the hazards were not being recognized. When PPE wasn’t worn, accidents happened in harsh circumstances like heat stress. This shows that the maritime industry’s safety rules aren’t always followed correctly when they focus too much on PPE and hazard analysis. There were also accidents because people chose the wrong PPE for high-risk scenarios. The conclusion is that marine safety requires an integrated strategy. While technological progress and legal requirements are crucial, the human aspect, especially PPE use, must not be overlooked. Using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) efficiently helps prevent marine mishaps and improve the maritime industry’s long-term sustainability. This paper utilizes the data from the study which conducted at Dar es salaam- Zanzibar vessel to assess personal protective equipment contribution on reduction of maritime accidents in Tanzania a case of Dar es salaam-Zanzibar vessels
