Abstract

The large quantity of crude oil spillage in the environment can result to the constant depletion of soil nutrients and death of some soil microorganisms. This study was aimed at isolating and characterizing bacteria from a ten (10) years old crude oil polluted farm land in B-Dere in Gokana Local Government of River State, Nigeria. Soil samples were collected randomly from two depths 0-15 and 15-30 cm of three study sites which were; the source of oil pollution (SR), a crude oil polluted farm land (OS) and a Control (unpolluted) farm land (CR). Samples were homogenized and replicated thrice giving a total of eighteen samples for bacterial analysis. Results revealed that Total Viable Bacteria count ranged from 3.0 x 104 cfu/g at 0-15 cm depth at the control farm (CR) to 9.1 x 104 cfu/g at the same depth at the source of oil spill (SR). Total Coliform count and total Escherichia coli counts ranged from 1.3 x103 cfu/g at 0-15 cm depth at the control (CR) to 2.3 x103 cfu/g at the same depth at the oil polluted farm (OS). A total of eight bacteria isolates were identified from the three study areas, some of which were; Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were the predominant bacteria species. The Isolated and characterized bacteria were all crude oil degraders which denote that the presence of crude oil gave rise to the presence of these organisms.
