Abstract

Today, almost everything is about social media. Some gurus claim that if you do not participate in Facebook, Youtube and other popular social media platforms, you are not part of the cyberspace. Whatsapp, Wechat, yahoo messenger, Facebook messenger and several other social media apps offer instant messaging service and have become a must-have for many persons. Whatsapp is the most popular instant messaging app in the world currently and boasts of over 2 billion active users, with over 5 billion downloads and over 100 billion messages sent every day. With such traffic, one cannot help but wonder how whatsapp works; how whatsapp handles so many concurrent users and messages, the kind of framework and programming language that enables that kind of scale and how it keeps all of its data safe. This paper thus, explores the whatsapp system design, server architecture and technology as well as exposes its current and future functionalities. The work appeals to both the tech-enthusiasts who would be more interested in discovering the frontend and backend tech stack and those in the non-tech disciplines whose concerns with whatsapp is to uncover capabilities, opportunities and challenges.
