Abstract

The paper assessed the impact of Bank of Agriculture (BOA) on food security and income of farming households in Sokoto State, Nigeria. The data used were generated from a survey involving a cross section of 440 farming households comprising of (220 beneficiaries and 220 non-beneficiaries of BOA) randomly selected using a multistage sampling technique. Cost of calorie function and binary logit regression model were used. Result revealed that 26.8% and 35.9% of the beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries respectively fall short of the recommended per person daily food intake estimate at 0.76 US Dollars. Result further indicated that age, farming experience, mode of farm land acquisition, total income and food consumption per household influence the food security status among the beneficiary farming households, while household size, educational level, mode of farm land acquisition and food consumption per household influence the food security status among the non-beneficiary farming households. It is therefore recommended that BOA scheme is a good programme to accommodate farming households with the security to increase their food security status.
